Agree the rules before you go

The single biggest cause of friction is unspoken assumptions. Ten minutes before the trip saves ten arguments during it. Agree on three things:

• What's shared vs personal. Accommodation, transport and group meals are usually shared. Souvenirs and that solo spa afternoon are not.
• How you'll split. Equal shares are simplest. If incomes vary a lot, some groups prefer proportional shares — decide up front.
• When you'll settle. Settling once at the end beats a dozen small transfers along the way.

Let one person pay, then track it

Trying to split every bill at the table is slow and painful. It's far easier to let whoever is nearest pay, log the expense against the group, and reconcile later. The only thing that matters is that every shared cost gets recorded the moment it happens — a receipt photographed and forgotten is a cost nobody remembers by day five.

Settle up once, cleanly
